Yahoo: Reuters and Yahoo team up for a user-generated content website

Yahoo and Reuters are planning on teaming up to launch a new user-generated content web site. The media group teamed up with Reuters to go in a new user-generated content direction. Through the new site, users will be able to upload pictures and video to Flickr. Once downloaded, editors from Yahoo and Reuters will distribute clips and photos to relevant online articles.

Users will not be paid for content that is used on Yahoo and Reuters sites, but will be paid if their videos are further distributed to Reuters’ clients. Photo editors at Reuters will be checking all images to make sure they haven’t been retouched or tampered with.

Both groups are hoping to further expand their user content resources beyond video and pictures in the future. Yahoo and Reuters will be facing competition for viewer’s media as more media groups turn to citizen journalism.

Yahoo: More on the Newspaper deal

Here is a little more detail on Yahoo!'s newspaper deal announced here, which is an ad revenue-sharing deal.

- the first step of the deal will bring together Yahoo's HotJobs and each newspaper individual classified section! A regular listing will be shown on Yahoo and/or the other and will allow users/people access to both of them.

- also, Yahoo will eventually begin populating the newspaper's websites with things like maps and local event listings.

- in time Yahoo will be providing search advertising on the paper's sites as well as republishing some content from the papers.

Some news industry analysts are worried that deals like this mean the newspaper industry is taking their eyes off of their core business and potential deals that could help the industry. But I think this a good business for both parts.

Google: Yahoo! vs Google on newspaper advertising

Yahoo! signed a deal with seven publishing companies that will allow more than 150 newspapers to sell advertising on its online classified service. The partnership will launch with jobs advertising on Yahoo's HotJobs site.

Involved in the deal with Yahoo! are newspaper giants Belo, Cox Newspapers, Hearst Newspapers, Journal Register, Lee Enterprises, MediaNews Group and E.W. Scripps.

The newspapers included in this news-media publishing consortium reach 38 US states. Here are the most important: The Denver Post, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Dallas Morning News, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Houston Chronicle, the Rocky Mountain News, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and the San Jose Mercury News.

The local online advertising opportunity is significant. The U.S. online advertising segment is predicted to grow from an estimated US$3.4 billion in 2006 to an estimated $12.4 billion by 2010, according to Bank of America.

Also to be considered is that 35 percent of all online searches are local, according to the Kelsey Group, with volume expected to increase from 20 billion searches in the 2007, to more than 30 billion searches by 2009.

But, Google already has a share on this newspapers ads business. Google signed a deal with 50 top newspapers to sell print ads through its website.

"This is a transformational deal for the newspaper industry," said William Dean Singleton, CEO of MediaNews Group.

"This relationship will significantly extend our local assets to a much wider audience, and gives us the technology required to fulfill the growing demands of advertisers and consumers," he added.

"This is the wave of the future. Everyone is recognizing that no one has all the pieces of the puzzle. The combination of online and offline is much more compelling than an online only or offline only proposition, especially with geo-targeted or local advertising" Sterling concluded.

If you haven't submitted a Sitemap before, check out the documentation on www.sitemaps.org for information on creating one. You can submit your Sitemap file to Google using Google webmaster tools. See the documentation that Yahoo! and Microsoft provide for information about submitting to them.

Yahoo: More about the recent Yahoo! Memo

The recent Yahoo! internal memo by Brad Garlinghouse is a tremendous read. Brad started by stating his love for Yahoo, for example:

"I proudly bleed purple and, yellow everyday! And like so many people here, I love this company"

Then he bluntly outlines the big problems he sees at Yahoo, and "I believe we must embrace our problems and challenges and that we must take decisive action". The problems he outlined are:

  • Yahoo lacks a focused, cohesive vision
  • Yahoo lacks clarity of ownership and accountability
  • Yahoo lacks decisiveness

Through the entire document, despite some harsh and blunt criticism, you can feel the passion Brad has for Yahoo ... read more

Yahoo: New social networking web2.0 acquisitions

Yahoo! has gone wild on plucking properties with social networking characteristics. The company announced that it had acquired Bix.com, a site where users set up and run contests ranging from singing and talent shows, to pure beauty pageants.

Much like del.icio.us and Flickr before it, Yahoo! will let Bix run under its existing brand, but for sure they will inject some advertising and links to other Yahoo properties in an effort to grow the already huge Yahoo! user base.

Epinions co-founder Mike Speiser, who also led the Bix team, now becomes a Yahoo vice president in charge of community sites like Yahoo Photos and Yahoo Groups.

Yahoo! also acquired MyBlogLog, a social networking service for blog readers who want to connect with other readers of the same blogs. What exactly Yahoo intends to do with this property? We'll just have to wait an see!

Yahoo: Deal with Vodafone for ads distribution

Yahoo! has been serving ads to handsets in Europe for a long time.

Yahoo! want's to extended its European mobile advertising strategy by partnering with Vodafone to distribute ads on the carrier's content services.

Vodafone will offer service discounts to "customers who agree to accept carefully targeted display advertisements". Ads will be served trough Yahoo's live! portal, games, television and picture messaging services.

In Europa there's more acceptance for mobile content and marketing, so targeting sponsored links to phone users is presents good prospects.

This agreement between Yahoo! and Vodafone will go into effect next year.

Google: Google vs Yahoo! 2006 third quarter earnings

During the third 2006 business quarter, up to the end of September, Google have continued to grow more and more over UK and US search engine market, with profits rising by 92%, from $381 million last year to $733 million.

Comparatively, Yahoo! has reported their third quarter profits sliding by 32%, from $253 million last year to $158.5 million this year.

The figures come a week after Google announced its takeover of the most successful web video company, YouTube, for $1.65 billion! Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, talked about this quarter's success: "Our third quarter results are a testament to the strength of our network of advertisers and partners, as well as our continuing focus on users."

With these latest financial results that have substantially exceeded market expectations, Google is unlikely to lose their position in the market any time soon, particularly with its ever-widening portfolio of products and the new advertising avenues it offers.

Yahoo! chairman Terry Semel was somewhat less optimistic on the performance of the Yahoo engine, and has offered hope for a turnaround next year by returning to a "back-to-basics" approach: "I am not satisfied with our current financial performance, and we intend to improve it. We are not exploiting our considerable strengths as we should be."

In the coming months Yahoo promises further optimization of their engines and a redesigned of their pay-per-click management system, while Google promised continued improvements on their meteoric launched services and recently acquired companies.

Yahoo!: Symantec and Yahoo sign deal signals

The deal between Symantec and Yahoo!, will see the Norton range of consumer security products offered to Yahoo users at a heavily discounted rate is more than simply an expansion of their previous collaborations.

AOL and McAfee have already teamed up to offer a similar deal to AOL users and the pricing of the Symantec package at $50 mirrors the Windows Live OneCare offering from Microsoft.

The major security vendors have been telegraphing their own insecurities ever since it became apparent that their former partner Microsoft signalled its intent to compete against them. Microsoft needs to find new markets to grow and security software for its own customer base is a no brainer.

For the past year or more, the security vendors have been flailing around in many directions trying to make sure they stay relevant and maintain a grip on their customers. Symantec, realizing its vulnerability in the consumer anti-virus space decided to diversify and bought storage management company Veritas in 2005.

Diversification or not, however, the importance of the anti-virus and internet security products to Symantec's survival as a thriving growing business was demonstrated in May when it launched a lawsuit against Microsoft seeking an injunction against further development of Windows Vista.

Symantec alleges that parts of V
