Google is preparing brand new
hosted-storage services dubbed Google GDrive, according to a report in
The Wall Street Journal.
The service will allow users to store data such as Office docs, digital music, video clips, and images from their PC hard drives onto the online storage space to be offered by Google.
Here are a few advantages of online storage:
- access to growing storage needs without relying on hard drives
- safe backup for important documents
- freedom to access personal storage files from any computer or mobile phone
- quickly upload, share or see their files (which will reside on Google's servers) via a high-speed Internet connection.
This service will include a limited amount of free storage with extra space available for a monthly or annual fee.
Despite its vast resources, Google is a late entrant into the hosted-storage arena, observers noted. Microsoft Corp. in August announced its free 500MB online storage service dubbed Windows Live Skydrive. Another Google rival, Amazon.com, last month guaranteed 99.9% uptime for its year-old S3 online storage offering, while Facebook in September unveiled its open Data Store API program.
Even EMC Corp. has driven a stake into the hosted-storage landscape with its October agreement to buy start-up Berkeley Data Systems Inc. and its popular Mozy online backup business for $76 million.
Google has already started adding extra storage for users of its Gmail Web-based e-mail service, which has been burning up capacity because of large digital files being stored such as photos and attachments.
The online storage subscription-based service is no news but may be ready for release early next year, according to the report.
According to Google though, data privacy have been put in place to protect user data.
"Gdrive" is just a few months away from release.

Batteries that can be recharged rather than tossed when the juice runs out are supposed to be more convenient for consumers. But for Wren Wright, they lose their power too quickly and unpredictably, sometimes leaving the shutterbug with a lifeless digital camera.

Samsung Electronics joined
Microsoft on Monday in launching the first mobile phone in Asia and Europe to use high-speed HSDPA wireless technology.

The new Samsung Ultra Messaging i600 was the world's thinnest 3G smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard. It is also the first smartphone that supports Web applications like podcasts and RSS Feeder, which scans websites for updates, the companies said.
The companies said the phone, which can connect with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0, was designed for work and play. It has two digital cameras and can be used for 3G video calls.
"The mobile population is increasingly looking to use one device that easily plugs into their life, both in and out of the office," said Pieter Knook, a senior vice president at Microsoft.
The device, powered by Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0, uses the new mobile protocol called HSDPA, or high-speed downlink packet access, that provides faster downloads of video and streaming music.

Quizam is a new way for study that might
come in handy for students.
It's a computer-based tool that utilizes time-tested quizzing methods that makes it easy for students to learn in an environment where their learning curve is accelerated. Learning is accelerated because the mechanism for recall, repetition and feedback reinforce memory.
It's versatile and can be accessed any time, by anyone! It prepares students for standardized tests, focuses on skills improvement and real-time assessment. It's the perfect tool for review, remediation and advanced work, K-12 through adult.
The program is freely downloadable (until 31 Dec. 2006) on the Internet, or available on a CD ROM, which is a benefit to schools in remote areas around the world. A six-month pilot study of seventy-one schools world-wide is underway, and results from the study will be available in early 2007.
What are the benefits ?
- Supports technology in the classroom initiatives, enabling an innovative way of teaching and learning.
- Helps teachers use assessment data to inform real world lesson planning.
- Increases parent-teacher communication.
- Encourages student participation and 'peer-to-peer' learning.
Quizzes include everything from English grammar, French verbs, math, science and social studies - to trivia quizzes, a boat license quiz, even a Cessna 172 Aircraft Checkout quiz. Quizam(R) is unique in that every time a person repeats a quiz, a different set of multiple choice questions appear. The program randomly chooses the possible answers and challenges the user each time.
The program was developed by
Russ Rossi, a computer programmer for twenty-five years and father of five children, the program began out of the need for helping his kids with homework.
Students can download Quizam for free (This student special offer is valid 'till December 31, 2006).

A posting to the iRows blog on Tuesday announced that Israeli service iRows will shut down on Dec. 31 and that the company's founders will join Google.
Google confirmed that it has hired
iRows founders
Yoah Bar-David and
Itai Raz and that they will work in Google's Tel Aviv and Haifa research and development centers. The company may be planning to beef up its online spreadsheet offering by hiring the founders of
iRows, a browser-based spreadsheet service.
Google introduced
Google Spreadsheets, a Web-based offering that lets users create and share spreadsheets and documents online, without using a software program like Microsoft's Excel.
IRows details how customers can transport their spreadsheets to Google Spreadsheets. Customers won't be able to transfer charts, however, because they aren't supported by Google Spreadsheets. Some iRows users complained in postings on the blog about having to sign up to a Google account in order to use Google Spreadsheets.

Two months ago,
Microsoft's research results said its phishing filter in Internet Explorer 7 is superior to the one included in
Mozilla's Firefox2.
But, Mozilla selected a testing company SmartWare to do a similar comparison. Not surprisingly, the results were different:
Firefox2 offers more effective phishing protection than IE7. Testers ran several known phishing Web sites through both IE7 and Firefox2. They found that, with the basic phishing protection enabled,
Firefox caught 78.85 percent of the scam sites, while
IE 7 flagged 66.35 percent.
Here is the complete
Mozilla phishing filter study.

Google wants people to have access to free mobile services powered with targeted advertising.
Google CEO, Eric Schmidt said in a statement to media group Reuters: “Your mobile phone should be free. It just makes sense that subsidies should increase”. Google is are aiming for a future where people would be able to use their mobiles for free if they accept to watch targeted forms of advertising.
Schmidt also added that more and more people are getting addicted to some form of digital media device, ending up spending hours on it and this makes them a potential audience for targeted advertising.
That being said, Google is stops being just a search business, they are now an advertising company on steroids. They've already announced solid plans to move their advertising to printed newspapers and television, and with this recent comment, it's clear that they'll be moving the advertising to mobile phones as well.

Internet surfing from a mobile device become more and more popular, so why not talk about Mobile Web2.0. The seemingly simple idea of extending Web 2.0 to Mobile Web 2.0 has many "tricks", for instance:
a) What is a restricted device?
b) What are the implications of extending the web to restricted devices?
c) As devices become creators and not mere consumers of information – what categories of intelligence can be captured/harnessed from restricted devices?
d) What is the impact for services as devices start using the web as a massive information repository and the PC as a local cache where services can be configured?

In a new development that will significantly broaden its product offering,
ApplianceWare has announced that it will now offer the ApplianceWare Server Appliance Edition software operating environment for network appliances based on Freescale's PowerQUICC processors containing a PowerPC core.
The offering will be offered with a selection of Freescale processor-based customer reference boards (CRBs) and development kits from selected OEM manufacturers. ApplianceWare Server Appliance Edition includes both the ApplianceWare J2ME platform and the ApplianceWare Server Linux based operating system. The ApplianceWare Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is based on the Sun Microsystems J2ME Connected Device Configuration (CDC) and enables value added software features that require a Java Virtual Machine.
The ApplianceWare J2ME JVM is bundled with the ApplianceWare Server and is available to server appliance OEMs and manufacturers that are making use of the low power and high performance of Freescale processor-based platforms in their product development. The ApplianceWare Server is a version of the Linux operating system optimized for PowerPC instruction set architecture. It offers manufacturers a complete operating environment for rapid product development on proven technologies.
ApplianceWare also offers application development, customization, and application integration services for platforms based on Freescale processors. These activities are focused on accelerating the implementation of Java enabled server software solutions for Freescale processor-based information appliances and devices.
The Server Appliance Edition is an implementation of ApplianceWare's Java virtual machine (JVM) environment that is tailored for the limited memory resources and device management requirements of network attached server appliance devices. The ApplianceWare JVM environment enables Java applications to run on network connected Freescale technology based devices. Java technology is key to bringing ApplianceWare's Common Information Model (CIM) and Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) compliant, policy-based management to the server appliance market.

EdenTree Technologies has announced
Lab Manager 5.0, a re-engineered version of its award-winning network-lab-automation software. The Lab Manager open-lab operating system works with any kind of network equipment, managing the physical-layer infrastructure to which test equipment and devices under test connect.
The result is a software-controlled lab environment with a drag-and-drop user interface that allows engineers to easily and remotely design and implement topologies. The software schedules topologies, configurations, and test scripts; searches for available devices; and reports on device usage. Because it supports a wide range of switches, Lab Manager works in any lab with any devices and any interface types, including POTS (plain-old telephone service)/analog, any rate of Ethernet, optical, Fibre Channel, and RF/coaxial interfaces.
A key reason that labs use the package is to share expensive test equipment among multiple users and multiple test beds. The queue-based scheduler enhances this capability by queuing tests to run as soon as equipment becomes available. Administrators can adjust the priorities or insert higher-priority projects into the queue. Another new feature is integration with power controllers, allowing test engineers to control power cycling and system rebooting directly from the GUI. In addition, test engineers can write scripts to control test topologies. Flexible user and group-level access permissions permit customers and partners to participate in testing and enable the lab to control its test beds.
Users typically implement
Lab Manager 5.0 with their switching infrastructure; list price is $100 per managed port.
