Mozilla: Firefox is better than IE7 at Phishing
But, Mozilla selected a testing company SmartWare to do a similar comparison. Not surprisingly, the results were different: Firefox2 offers more effective phishing protection than IE7. Testers ran several known phishing Web sites through both IE7 and Firefox2. They found that, with the basic phishing protection enabled, Firefox caught 78.85 percent of the scam sites, while IE 7 flagged 66.35 percent.
Here is the complete Mozilla phishing filter study.

Mozilla: Firefox 3.0 will be available in 2007
Officially Firefox 3.0, code named "Gran Paradiso", will pick up where Firefox 2.0 leaves off, said Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla's director of engineering. Among the features Mozilla wants to get into 3.0 is a new concept they call "Places" wich will be a revamped bookmarks tool which was dropped from Firefox 2.0 in April. Places, a major redesign of the bookmark model, will store both bookmarks and browsing history in a database, then let users search the database for sites they want to revisit.
"Places just wasn't ready to go in Firefox 2.0" said Schroepfer. "We definitely didn't want to add it until it was ready for prime time."
Mozilla also begun work on a new rendering engine to debut in Firefox 3.0. It will replace the old Gfx graphics infrastructure for something called Cairo 2D. Both Firefox 2.0 and Firefox 1.5 relied on Gecko 1.8 code, but Firefox 3.0 will use the Gecko 1.9 code base. Mozilla's switching to the Cairo 2D graphics library to add hardware-accelerated 2D graphics capabilities to the browser.
Also, Firefox 3.0 will be dropping support for Windows 95, 98, and Millennium.
There is much more stuff in the works for Forefox 3.0, but we'll have to wait and see what cool features the Santa brings ;)
Mozilla: Firefox 2.0 is available
New features in Firefox2.0 is the included built-in spell checking, an anti-phishing feature and JavaScript 1.7.
The new Firefox 2.0 includes enhancements in security, tabbed browsing, performance, extensions management and subscribing to RSS feeds.
The update to Firefox's JavaScript interpreter is an important change, especially as more Web sites take advantage of the new benefits of Asynchronous JavaScript (AJAX), especially as they embed objects or functionality from Google and Microsoft Windows Live.
Firefox 2.0 is now available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
Mozilla: The famous Eudora e-mail client will be open source
Qualcomm, creators of the e-mail client Eudora for both Windows and Mac OS X, have announced that they have partnered with the Mozilla Foundation to make Eudora open source. The new Eudora will be based on the Thunderbird platform, but will retain its uniquely feature set and enhancements. The new open source Eudora will be free to the public.
Steve Dorner, the vicepresident of Qualcomm's Eudorea Group and the original founder of the software in 1988, said "Using the Mozilla Thunderbird technology platform as a basis for future versions of Eudora will provide some key infrastructure that the existing versions lacked, such as a cross-platform code base and a world-class display engine"
We'll see if this move on the open source market will save Eudora from "extinction"!

Mozilla: Firefox 2.0 Beta 2 released
Mozilla Foundation has released Firefox 2 Beta 2 browser with lots of improvements.
Also on the same note, Microsoft launched the first release candidate of its forthcoming Internet Explorer 7 browser last week, with the final version expected to appear before the year is out. Firefox has more than 10% of the browser market and Internet Explorer has about 85%.
To doanload tha latest beta go here: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/bonecho/all-beta.h...
Here are a few of the news stuff to be found in Firefox 2 Beta 2:
- Visual Refresh: Firefox 2's theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability without altering the familiarity of the browsing experience. For instance, toolbar buttons now glow when you hover over them. We will continue to improve the look and feel throughout the release candidate process.
- Built-in phishing protection: Phishing Protection warns users when they encounter suspected Web forgeries, and offers to return the user to their home page. Phishing Protection is turned on by default, and works by checking sites against either a local or online list of known phishing sites. This list is automatically downloaded and regularly updated when the Phishing Protection feature is enabled. Please note that at this time we are using a limited list to test the core Phishing Protection framework within the browser. Users are encouraged to wait until a future release of Firefox 2 to verify the accuracy of the list of Web forgeries.
- Enhanced search capabilities: Search term suggestions will now appear as users type in the integrated search box when using the Google, Yahoo! or Answers.com search engines. A new search engine manager makes it easier to add, remove and re-order search engines, and users will be alerted when Firefox encounters a website that offers new search engines that the user may wish to install.
- Improved tabbed browsing: By default, Firefox will open links in new tabs instead of new windows, and each tab will now have a close tab button. Power users who open more tabs than can fit in a single window will see arrows on the left and right side of the tab strip that let them scroll back and forth between their tabs. The History menu will keep a list of recently closed tabs, and a shortcut lets users quickly re-open an accidentally closed tab.
- Resuming your browsing session: The Session Restore feature restores windows, tabs, text typed in forms, and in-progress downloads from the last user session. It will be activated automatically when installing an application update or extension, and users will be asked if they want to resume their previous session after a system crash.
- Previewing and subscribing to Web feeds: Users can decide how to handle Web feeds (like this one), either subscribing to them via a Web service or in a standalone RSS reader, or adding them as Live Bookmarks. My Yahoo!, Bloglines and Google Reader come pre-loaded as Web service options, but users can add any Web service that handles RSS feeds.
- Inline spell checking: A new built-in spell checker enables users to quickly check the spelling of text entered into Web forms (like this one) without having to use a seperate application.
- Live Titles: When a website offers a microsummary (a regularly updated summary of the most important information on a Web page), users can create a bookmark with a "Live Title". Compact enough to fit in the space available to a bookmark label, they provide more useful information about pages than static page titles, and are regularly updated with the latest information. There are several websites that can be bookmarked with Live Titles, and even more add-ons to generate Live Titles for other popular websites.

Firefox: Getting things done with GTDGmail
These days I stumble upon this cool gmail hackery ... GTDGmail. Basically this is a Mozilla Firefox extension that integrates a highly effective methodology of Getting Things Done into the popular Google email service Gmail.
Safety features: GTDGmail contains NO 3rd party software, NO Data Monitoring:GTDGmail sends no data back to a central server); NO Destructive Capabilities: GTDGmail integrates into Gmail, but absolutely no function can delete anything important (like your emails).
GTDGmail discreetly integrates into Gmail and features:
- Easily Organize GTD Labels
Labels are now structured into Contexts, Status, Projects and References; making it easier to read and use. Labels can be applied much more rapidly than in standard Gmail. - Quickly Review Outstanding Tasks
Quickly review outstanding GTD tasks that are over a few days old. - Save Specialized Searches
Searches can be created and saved that enable precise queries over your GTD tasks. - Send Myself Tasks and References
You can quickly compose Tasks and References and send them to your Inbox. - Print Tasks to Cards
Select, sort and print tasks in 3x5 inch format so you can easily carry them. Extra useful if you use the Hipster PDA!
I'll write here my thoughts after I will use it for a week or two. In the meanwhile test it your self.

Firefox: Sex and Religion promo
The first group devised a variant of the Mozilla browser called Faith Browser. In this Faith Browser, the home icon was replaced with a church and a halo icon was slotted in where the refresh icon usually goes.
"When you refreshed you got a new line of scripture" they said. "This is all done in a non-cynical way."
While the Faith Browser has done well, it hasn't done as well as Firefoxies. This is a variant of the browser in which users submit their photographs, which are shown when the browser goes up. Friends can then vote for them.
"The trick is you have to download Firefox to vote" they said. "They had a 30 percent conversion rate, which is quite high."
The Firefoxies group became, for a period, the eighth most active organization for recruiting new users to Firefox.

Antivirus: New Trojan as Firefox Extension
"This information can include, but is not limited to, credit numbers, passwords, e-banking pin numbers" and other sensitive information, McAfee warned. The firm said the application is also capable of sniffing passwords from ICQ, FTP, IMAP and POP3 traffic. The issue is considered "low-risk," and those with current DAT files would not be susceptible to infection. The trojan requires another piece of malware, called "Downloader-AXM" to work, and McAfee has already added protection against that virus. However, McAfee says it does continue to circulate in the wild.
